A specific example
As incandescent lamps were phased out, aircraft heads-up-display (HUD) landing systems — which use an infrared signal detected by indium antimonide (InSb) sensors to enable landing in low-visibility conditions — risked losing their light source. SSLS engineered a white-light-plus-IR PAR lamp that reproduces the required IR signal, allowing these HUD landing systems to keep working with their existing detectors. It is a clear case of engineering a new light source to fit an existing detector set.
