Lighting Reliability & Forensics
SSLS evaluates and analyzes the reliability and failure of LED and lighting products — from tear-down and reverse-engineering to accelerated life testing — and documents findings to support warranty and legal matters.
LED reliability
SSLS has led the U.S. DOE LED Systems Reliability Consortium (LSRC) — an ongoing collaboration of industry experts working to deepen the understanding of LED luminaire lifetime and reliability and to make product lifetime more predictable. Dr. Morgan Pattison has led the consortium and contributed to many of its published methods and studies, which address:
- Chromaticity (color) shift and its impact on luminaire performance
- Luminaire lifetime — recommendations for testing and reporting
- Accelerated-life (“hammer”) testing and failure-mode analysis
- Long-term aging of chip-on-board LEDs
- Reliability of narrow-band red emitters and dim-to-warm products
- Lifetime and benchmarking of UV LED products
Forensics & failure analysis
SSLS can tear down, reverse-engineer, measure, and characterize both lighting products and the lighting conditions of indoor and outdoor settings — measuring intensity, spectral power distribution, illuminance, irradiance, spectral reflectance, color filters, luminescent materials and films, electrical inputs, circuit configuration, and optical distribution, in-situ or in the lab.
We characterize and document product failures — for example, phosphor delamination that produces a strong blue color shift in roadway luminaires — and support warranty evaluation.
Litigation & IP support
SSLS supports legal matters involving product structure, materials, and reliability, providing technical analysis and, where appropriate, expert testimony. Specific engagements are confidential.
